SpringWell WS1 vs US Water Systems Matrixx inFusion: Which Iron and Sulfur Filter?

Specs verified 2026-10-05 from manufacturer pages and retailer listings. We have not lab-tested either system.

These are the top two systems in our whole-house ranking, and they treat the same three problems, iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, by two different methods. The SpringWell WS1 is a single-tank air-injection filter: air oxidizes the contaminants, media traps them, and a backwash flushes them to drain. The US Water Systems Matrixx inFusion injects hydrogen peroxide into the water with a Stenner pump and then runs it through a backwashing catalytic carbon tank.

The practical difference is how much iron and sulfur each one is rated to handle, and what you have to keep buying. The WS1 is rated for iron up to 7 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm with no consumables; the inFusion is rated for iron up to 20 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 30 ppm, and it uses peroxide you refill. If your test is inside the WS1's limits, it is the simpler and cheaper machine. If it is not, the inFusion is the one built for it.

What each one treats

SpringWell publishes the WS1's limits as iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm, with an operating range of pH 6.5 to 10 and 25 to 80 psi. Those are high figures for a residential air-injection unit, and they cover the majority of iron and odor complaints. The media is given a 10+ year life with no gallon rating.

US Water Systems rates the inFusion for iron up to 20 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 30 ppm and manganese up to 1 ppm across pH 6 to 9, and adds iron- and sulfur-reducing bacteria to the list per the maker. The lower end of that pH range matters: the maker's own pitch is that it works where air-injection and birm units need pH 7 or higher. The system ships with a 15-gallon peroxide solution tank, 10 gallons of hydrogen peroxide, an internal meter that counts gallons and proportions the dose, and a catalytic carbon tank that backwashes roughly every two days.

Manganese limits are identical at 1 ppm. The gap is in iron and sulfur: the inFusion's published ceilings are roughly three to four times the WS1's. Neither system claims to disinfect, and both need sediment protection on a sandy well.

Flow rate and sizing

The WS1 is rated 12 GPM service flow for one to four bathrooms, with the WS4 as the larger size on the same listing (page: up to 20 GPM; manual: 18 GPM) at $2,677.50 sale. The tank is 10 x 54 in., 64 in. with the head, with a 1 in. connection and a 133 lb shipping weight.

The base inFusion, model 081-MIF-150, is rated 10 GPM service and 5 GPM backwash on a 10 x 54 in. tank; the 081-MIF-200 is 15 GPM service and 8 GPM backwash on a 12 x 52 in. tank at $3,179.16 sale. The manual also references a 20 GPM 081-MIF-10-250 that is not on the product page. Add the 15-gallon peroxide tank and the injection panel, and the inFusion takes more floor space than the single WS1 tank; the overall footprint is not published. Bypass fittings are 3/4 in. and 1 in. male pipe thread.

For a three-bathroom house the WS1's 12 GPM and the inFusion's 10 GPM are close enough that flow should not decide it. For a larger home, compare the WS4 against the 15 GPM inFusion instead.

Warranty, certifications and support

SpringWell's lifetime warranty against defects covers fittings, media, tanks, housings, bypasses, valves and in/out heads, with solid-state electronic heads limited to 5 years per the product page (7 per SpringWell's warranty page) and coverage tied to the registered owner at the original address; returns are accepted within 6 months only for unused, uninstalled items, with a 10% restocking fee. US Water Systems' manual gives a lifetime warranty on the media tank, a ten-year parts warranty on the valve, electronics and miscellaneous parts, and five years on the Stenner injection parts; the product page itself says a full 5-year warranty on the proportional injection system. Registration must be returned within 30 days of installation, and the company-wide One-Year Money Back Promise applies.

Neither has a system-level NSF/ANSI certification. SpringWell's product page states none and the About page says certified components; US Water Systems says all NSF approved components. Both control heads are Bluetooth-enabled; the inFusion's valve runs on 12 volts with battery backup for memory and has one internal moving part.

Price, install and running cost

The WS1 was $2,231.25 at springwellwater.com as of Oct 2026 (sale; regular $2,625.00), plus the required $134.25 well water test, a $58.79 bypass valve and free shipping. The inFusion was $2,982.95 at uswatersystems.com as of Oct 2026 (sale; regular shown as $5,491.59), about $750 more. The size of that discount makes the inFusion's regular price hard to interpret, so compare on the sale figures.

Both need a drain and a 120V outlet. SpringWell markets the WS1 as a DIY install with a manual and video. The inFusion's owner's manual is written for the installer, with a 1/2 in. ID drain line and a 12 V transformer, and the install is two parts, filter tank plus injection panel; the maker lists it for either owner or plumber install. Running cost is where they part: the WS1 has no scheduled consumable, while the inFusion uses hydrogen peroxide that must be purchased and refilled, with 10 gallons included to start.

Verdict

Buy the SpringWell WS1 if your test reads at or below 7 ppm iron and 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and your pH is 6.5 or higher: it costs about $750 less, needs no chemical, and carries the simpler lifetime warranty, which is why it holds first place in our ranking. Buy the US Water Systems Matrixx inFusion when the test is beyond those limits, when pH sits between 6 and 6.5, or when iron and sulfur bacteria are in the picture, because its 20 ppm iron and 30 ppm sulfur ratings are the highest published in our group and no air-injection unit here matches them. Accept, in return, a peroxide refill habit, a two-part install and a 30-day registration deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Which handles more iron, the WS1 or the inFusion?

The Matrixx inFusion. US Water Systems rates it for iron up to 20 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 30 ppm; SpringWell rates the WS1 for iron up to 7 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm. Both are rated for manganese up to 1 ppm.

Does the Matrixx inFusion need chemicals?

Yes. It injects hydrogen peroxide with a Stenner pump ahead of the catalytic carbon tank, and the peroxide must be purchased and refilled. The system ships with a 15-gallon solution tank and 10 gallons of peroxide. The WS1 uses air injection and has no chemical feed.

Does either system work on low-pH water?

The inFusion is rated for pH 6 to 9, and the maker positions it for water where air-injection units need pH 7 or higher. The WS1 is rated for pH 6.5 to 10. Water below pH 6 is outside both ranges and needs a neutralizer first.

Which has the longer warranty?

Both give a lifetime warranty on the tank. SpringWell extends lifetime coverage to the media, valves and fittings with 5 years on the electronic head per the product page (7 per its warranty page); US Water Systems gives 10 years on the valve and electronics and 5 years on the Stenner injection parts, and requires registration within 30 days.
