Aquasana Rhino Well Water with UV vs Culligan Aquasential Smart HE Iron-Cleer

Specs verified 2026-10-05 from manufacturer pages and retailer listings. We have not lab-tested either system.

This comparison crosses two business models as well as two technologies. The Aquasana Rhino Well Water with UV is sold direct online at a published price, with a carbon and KDF tank, a sediment pre-filter and an NSF/ANSI 55 Class B certified UV lamp. The Culligan Aquasential Smart HE Iron-Cleer is sold, installed and serviced only through local Culligan dealers, with pricing by quote, and it is a two-tank aeration and birm iron filter certified against NSF/ANSI 42 for iron reduction.

Because the Culligan has no verifiable price or retail listing, it is not in our ranked list; its specs come from Culligan's product page and owner's guide. The Aquasana ranks fourth. The two overlap very little in what they treat, so the question is not which is better but which problem you are solving.

Owner's manual (Sep 2025) says only that the Rhino system is 'Independently tested for the reduction of bacteria, viruses, cysts, and other contaminants commonly found in well water'; no NSF/ANSI 42 or 53 certification is cited for the tank. WQA product database (find.wqa.org, read 2026-10-06) returns no listing for 'WH-WELL', 'EQ-WELL' or 'AQ-UV'; its Aquasana Rhino entries are other models (WH-1000, WH-1010, WH-1011, WH-1021). What each one treats

The Culligan Iron-Cleer is an iron filter. A pressurized aeration tank with a 110 V air pump oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, and a second tank of birm media over G-50 and Cullsan underbedding traps the result. Culligan rates it for clear-water iron up to 10 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 5.0 ppm, within pH 7.0 to 8.5 and with at least 100 ppm alkalinity. The owner's guide says it is tested and certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI 372, CSA B483.1 and NSF/ANSI 42 for iron reduction, up to 1,400 gallons between backwashes on the 10 in. model; the hydrogen sulfide claim is as tested by Culligan, not certified.

The Aquasana does not claim iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide reduction at all. Its 20 in. sediment pre-filter, upflow carbon and KDF tanks and 10 in. post-filter are aimed at chlorine, chloramines, lead, mercury, asbestos, microplastics and what Aquasana calls 78 contaminants, and its UV lamp is certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class B for bacteria and viruses (up to 99.8%, a maker figure). On a well with staining or odor it needs an iron filter ahead of it; on a well with a bacteria result it offers what the Culligan does not, a disinfection stage.

Flow rate and sizing

The Aquasana is rated 7.0 GPM with up to 14.7 GPM peak per the product page, operating at 20 to 100 psi, in a single 57 in. tall, 11 in. diameter unit that fits 3/4 in. or 1 in. main lines. The media is rated for 500,000 gallons or 5 years.

The Culligan's owner's guide rates the 10 in. model at 4 gpm normal service flow at 6 psi drop (6 gpm at 9 psi maximum) and the 12 in. model at 4 gpm at 4 psi (9 gpm at 14 psi maximum), with a footnote that the flow and pressure-drop figures have not been validated by WQA or IAPMO. Operating pressure is 20 to 60 psi. It is a two-tank installation, 67 in. tall and 26 in. wide for the 10 in. model with two 10 x 54 in. tanks (65 x 32 in. with two 12 x 52 in. tanks on the 12 in. model), and its 1,400-gallon rating between backwashes is based on 4 gpm and 10 mg/L of dissolved iron. Both are low for a large household; the Culligan's 4 to 6 gpm is the lower.

Warranty, certifications and support

Aquasana's 5-year limited warranty covers the Rhino system for 5 years or 500,000 gallons (12 months on the installation kit and the pre- and post-filter housings), with proof of purchase required, cartridges excluded, the UV unit under its own manual warranty, and coverage void if the system is moved; there is a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. Culligan's product page lists ten years on the circuit board, control valve body and tank (excluding internal parts), five years on the Soft-Minder meter and one year on the entire unit. Service comes through the dealer who installed it.

On certifications the Culligan is the better documented iron filter: NSF/ANSI 42, NSF/ANSI 372 and CSA B483.1, all certified by WQA. Few iron filters carry a certified reduction claim. The Aquasana's certification is on its UV stage, NSF/ANSI 55 Class B, while the Rhino tank is described as independently tested, the pre-filter is marked not NSF certified in the manual, and no NSF/ANSI 42 or 53 certification is cited for the contaminant list.

Price, install and running cost

The Aquasana was $1,749.00 at aquasana.com as of Oct 2026 (sale; MSRP $3,498.00), with a $124 Pro-Grade Bypass Kit and a $174 Low Maintenance pre-filter as options. It ships with an assembly kit and a DIY manual, needs no drain or backwash, needs an outlet for the UV, and Aquasana strongly recommends a licensed plumber. Upkeep is a pre-filter every 2 months (6 with the optional pre-filter) and a UV lamp yearly.

The Culligan has no published price; it is quoted and installed by a dealer, and the site says it can go anywhere with access to main water piping, a drain and a 120 V outlet. The air pump and backwash are automatic, with the aeration tank recharging itself, so there is no chemical feed and no cartridge; the Culligan Connect app, Soft-Minder meter and an optional leak sensor come with it. Installation and dealer service are part of a price this comparison cannot give you.

Verdict

These two are not substitutes. If your well test shows iron, manganese or sulfur, the Culligan HE Iron-Cleer is the one built for it, with a certified iron-reduction claim and dealer installation, provided your pH is between 7.0 and 8.5, alkalinity is at least 100 ppm and your household can live with 4 gpm of normal service flow (6 to 9 gpm maximum); get the dealer's quote in writing, because the price is the part we cannot verify. If your test shows bacteria, sediment or taste problems and clean metals, the Aquasana Rhino Well Water with UV covers them at a published $1,749.00 with a certified UV stage and no drain. If you have both problems, an iron filter first and a UV stage after is the order.

Both systems have full spec pages: Aquasana Rhino Well Water with UV Whole House Filter and Culligan Aquasential Smart High Efficiency Iron-Cleer Water Filter. For the wider field, see the ranked list, and size either one against your flow with the sizing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Culligan not in the ranked list?

Culligan sells the Iron-Cleer only through local dealers with pricing by in-home quote, so there is no verifiable price or retail listing to rank it against the others. Its specs are still on its product page on this site, and this comparison uses them.

Does the Aquasana remove iron like the Culligan does?

No. Aquasana does not claim iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide reduction for the Rhino Well Water with UV. The Culligan Iron-Cleer is rated for clear-water iron up to 10 ppm and hydrogen sulfide up to 5 ppm, and its iron reduction is certified against NSF/ANSI 42.

Does the Culligan treat bacteria?

No. The Iron-Cleer is an aeration and birm iron filter with no disinfection stage. The Aquasana includes a UV lamp certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class B.

Which has the longer warranty?

The Culligan on its major parts: ten years on the circuit board, control valve body and tank, five on the Soft-Minder meter, one year on the entire unit. The Aquasana carries a 5-year or 500,000-gallon limited warranty with cartridges excluded.
