Kinetico Premier XP S250 Water Softener

Water softener · 11.5 GPM · Treats hardness, iron · Dealer quote only

The Kinetico Premier XP S250 is a non-electric, twin-tank water softener driven by the force of moving water. One tank stays in service while the other regenerates, so there is no hard-water bypass during regeneration, and regeneration is demand-based, not timed. The S250 XP is sized for homes with larger plumbing and high water use; the S150 XP is smaller and the S250 OD XP is the outdoor version.

Premier XP softeners are certified by WQA against NSF/ANSI 44 for softener performance and barium and radium 226/228 reduction, and to NSF/ANSI 372 and CSA B483.1; the manual notes some OD XP models are not WQA certified. Kinetico also says the softener removes soluble iron, with iron-cleaning salt recommended, but that is a maker claim outside the certification. Kinetico's site and owner's manual give no GPM rating or grain capacity; its Premier XP performance data sheet, read on a dealer's site, rates the S250 XP at 11.5 gpm at a 15 psi drop and 10,837 to 14,686 grains per cycle depending on the salt setting, a per-tank figure that is not comparable with single-tank ratings. No dimensions are published.

The Premier XP is sold and installed only through authorized Kinetico dealers, so pricing is by dealer quote and we show published specs only. Warranty is 10 years on all parts, including the resin, bypass valves and prefilter assemblies, with freight and labor excluded. Resin coverage requires upstream dechlorination when oxidizers are present.

Service flow11.5 GPMKinetico Premier XP Performance Data Sheet (Kinetico document 16528A, dated 04.18.2024; copy read on an authorized dealer's site because kinetico.com does not link it): S250 XP 'Service flow rate at 15 psi (or less) drop: 11.5 gpm (43.5 L/min)'. S150 XP: 9 gpm; S250 OD XP (Overdrive, both tanks in service): 23 gpm. Kinetico's own product page and owner's manual give no GPM figure ('generous flow rates').
Capacity14,686 grainsPerformance Data Sheet 16528A, S250 XP: resin 0.7 cu ft per tank; capacity per cycle 10,837 grains at 2.4 lb salt (4,515 grains per lb, the efficiency-rated setting, 'Meets California requirements of 4000 grains exchanged per pound of salt') or 14,686 grains at 4.4 lb salt (3,338 grains per lb). The higher setting is recorded in grains. Twin-tank demand regeneration means capacity is per tank per cycle, so these numbers are much smaller than single-tank softener ratings and are not directly comparable. Max flow to drain during regeneration 2.1 gpm.

Confirmed in the WQA product database (2026-10-06): Kinetico Incorporated, brand 'KINETICO PREMIER XP', model 'S250 XP' (and 'S250 OD XP'), 'DIR-Efficiency Rated', listed under NSF/ANSI 44 with reduction claims 'Barium; Hardness; Radium 226/228', under NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 and under CSA B483.1. Data sheet footnote: 'Q850 OD XP w/Chloraban is not Tested and Certified by WQA.' Soluble iron removal is a maker claim, not a certified claim. Pros and cons

Pros

  • WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 44 with a 10-year all-parts warranty that includes the resin
  • No electricity or timers; twin tanks avoid hard-water bypass during regeneration
  • Maker states it removes soluble iron, with iron-cleaning salt recommended

Cons

  • Dealer-only; no published price or dimensions, and flow and capacity appear only in the performance data sheet, not on kinetico.com
  • Iron removal is not part of the certification and requires iron-cleaning additives
  • Resin warranty is voided if oxidizers are present without an upstream dechlorinator

Our take

The S250 XP is for a hard-water well where you want certified NSF/ANSI 44 softening without electricity, continuous soft water during regeneration and a 10-year warranty that covers the resin. It is hard to compare on paper: kinetico.com shows no flow rate, grain capacity or price (the first two sit in a performance data sheet), so the dealer visit is where the sizing happens. Its iron claim is uncertified and needs iron-cleaning salt.
