SpringWell STR-1 Tannin Removal System and Softener

Water softener · 12 GPM · Treats tannins, hardness · $2,788 (sale) at SpringWell as of Oct 2026

The SpringWell STR-1 is a single whole-house tank that combines tannin removal with salt-based softening, for wells with tannin color and hardness in the same test. SpringWell does not say what resin it uses, and no maximum tannin level is published. The STR-1 (Core, 1-3 bathrooms) is rated 12 GPM and 30,000 grains; the STR-4 (Pro, 4-6 bathrooms) is 15 GPM and 45,000 grains. No NSF, WQA or IAPMO certification is stated.

It is not an iron filter. SpringWell requires feed water free of hydrogen sulfide, oils, copper above 1.30 mg/L and oxidized iron or manganese, so iron or a rotten-egg smell needs sediment and iron or sulfur treatment ahead of this tank, with UV after it. Regeneration is automatic and salt is the only consumable; you need a drain, brine tank and power. The tank is 10 x 54 in., 88 lb, with 1 in. connections.

Price was $2,787.62 at springwellwater.com as of Oct 2026 (sale; regular $3,279.55); the STR-4 was $3,015.90. Install is DIY. Warranty is lifetime on tanks, valves and heads, but the product page limits electronic heads to 5 years where SpringWell's warranty page says 7. The '6-month money-back guarantee' badge covers only unused, uninstalled items, with a 10% restocking fee; an installed system is returnable only if SpringWell finds it defective.

WarrantyLifetime manufacturer warrantyLifetime: 'Manufacturer's lifetime warranty against defects' on fittings, tanks, housings, bypasses, valves and in/out heads under normal use; registered original owner at the original address only. Electronic-head term conflict (read 2026-10-06): the Warranty tab on this product page says "Limited Warranty for a period of 5- years" for solid-state electronic heads, while springwellwater.com/warranty/ says "Limited Warranty for a period of 7- years"; both say 10 years for retention/mineral tanks 14 in. or larger. The same 5-vs-7 mismatch appears on every SpringWell product page read today, so it is a site-wide inconsistency, not an STR-specific term; the STR-1/STR-4 installation manual contains no warranty text. Page badge reads '6-month money-back guarantee'. Return fine print on the product page: returns accepted within six months only for unused, uninstalled items in undamaged packaging, with a 10% restocking fee (up to 25% for refused deliveries) and shipping not refunded; the "6-month Performance Promise" says installed systems are not eligible for return unless SpringWell determines them defective.
CertificationsNot statedNo third-party system certification is stated on the STR product page. Re-checked 2026-10-06: product page text still contains no NSF, WQA, IAPMO or "certified" wording. WQA certified-product database (find.wqa.org/find-products) keyword searches for "SpringWell", "Spring Well", "Wise Water", "BlackComb" and "FutureSoft" each returned zero listings (a control search for "Pentair" returned listings). IAPMO listing directory could not be queried by script, so IAPMO status was not checked. NSF certified-product database (info.nsf.org), searched 2026-10-06: no matching listing found for this model.

Our take

The STR-1 earns its price only if your test shows both tannins and hardness, because it replaces two tanks with one. If you have tannins alone, the US Water Systems Matrixx Tannin costs less; if you have iron or sulfur, neither unit is the first fix and you need iron treatment ahead of either. The unpublished resin type and tannin limit are the gap, and SpringWell's 6-month return window does not cover an installed system, so send SpringWell your test before ordering and retest after install.
