US Water Systems Matrixx Tannin Removal System

Water softener · 10 GPM · Treats tannins · $2,195 (sale) at US Water Systems as of Oct 2026

The US Water Systems Matrixx Tannin is a whole-house anion-exchange tank for well water stained yellow or tea-colored by tannins. The 080-MXX-TN-100 is 1.0 cu ft at 10 GPM; the 080-MXX-TN-200 is 2.0 cu ft at 20 GPM. Those are the manual's peak figures; it rates normal service flow at 8 and 15 GPM. US Water Systems says its Tanex resin removes 99.5-100% of tannins, a manufacturer claim with no system certification; only NSF certified components are claimed. It does not soften water, and no maximum tannin level, pH range or iron limit is published.

This is not an iron filter and does not replace one. Order matters: sediment first, then iron or sulfur treatment, then a softener if hardness is above 5 gpg (US Water Systems' own instruction), then this tank, with any UV last. It regenerates with softener salt in about 1 hour 20 minutes and needs a drain, a brine tank and a 12-volt plug-in supply. The resin tank is 9 x 48 in.

Price was $2,195 at uswatersystems.com as of Oct 2026 (sale, against a $3,658.34 compare-at price); the 20 GPM size was $3,195. Install is DIY; the manual gives 1 in. or 3/4 in. MPT connections. Warranty is lifetime on tanks and 10 years on valve and electronics, with a one-year money-back promise.

Our take

Buy the Matrixx Tannin if a lab test confirms tannins and you already have iron and sediment handled upstream; it is cheaper than the SpringWell STR-1 and carries a longer money-back window. Add a softener ahead of it if hardness is over 5 gpg, since this tank does not soften. The missing tannin, pH and iron limits mean you are trusting the maker's sizing, so send your test to US Water Systems before ordering.
